In general, the biological process from converting the lignocellulose biomass to fuel ethanol involves: (1) pretreatment either to remove lignin or hemicellulose to liberate cellulose; (2) depolymerization of carbohydrate polymers to produce free sugars by cellulase mediated action; (3) fermentation of hexose and/or pentose sugars to produce ethanol; (4) distillation of ethanol.

Read MoreDepleted supplies of fossil fuel, regular price hikes of gasoline, and environmental damage have necessitated the search for economic and eco-benign alternative of gasoline. Ethanol is produced from food/feed-based substrates (grains, sugars, and molasses), and its application as an energy source does not seem fit for long term due to the increasing fuel, food, feed, and other needs. These ...
Read MoreSteps involved in conversion of biomass into ethanol- rectify the 1st paragraph. Ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass involves the subsequent chief steps: pretreatment of the biomass to render the cellulose and hemicelluloses amenable to enzymatic attack, hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses into fermentable sugars, fermentation of ...
Read MoreCurrent efforts have been made to increase sugar yields through an efficient bioconversion process that doubles the production of ethanol. In order to improve scaling up of the cellulase production process and to address a significant bottleneck, recent advances have been made to overcome the difficulties associated with heat transfer during the fermentation process.
Read More2011-5-3 Over the past few decades, a large number of research efforts have focused on the bioconversion of lignocellulose to produce biofuels, such as ethanol [1, 3]. This process generally involves three main steps: (1) pretreatment, to break down the recalcitrant structures of lignocellulose; (2) enzymatic hydrolysis, to hydrolyze polysaccharides (e.g., cellulose, hemicellulose) into fermentable sugars; and (3) fermentation, to convert sugars into ethanol.
